THE ROLE

As the Associate, Press + Media Relations, you will be instrumental in executing our organizational communication strategy, focusing on media outreach, reputation management, and supporting cross-functional staff with media-related needs. This role involves collaborating with internal teams; developing, managing, and fostering growth in media relationships; and promoting the general awareness of Vote Solar’s mission through various channels. In their first year, this role will prioritize the development of nationwide media relations protocols, and the socialization of those protocols across departments, as well as relationship building with local and national media.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate, Press + Media Relations primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

ORGANIZATIONAL REPUTATION MANAGEMENT (20%)

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the organizational reputation management strategy.

  • Assist in the development of nationwide media relations protocols, and the socialization of those protocols across departments.

  • Support program and central team staff in media training, assessing and developing press and media relations tools, assets, and outreach needs.

PRESS AND MEDIA RELATIONS (20%)

  • Support the development and execution of the organization’s public relations goals. 

  • Manage and contribute to the growth of press relationships, lists, and placements across National, state and local outlets.

  • Assist in overseeing the process, workflow, and communication for organizational press relations and outreach.

MEDIA ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES (20%)

  • Assist in creating press opportunities, including press events, gaggles, and conferences, to promote and amplify Vote Solar priorities.

  • Identify media opportunities that position Vote Solar as the expert for equitable energy policy, connecting outlets with appropriate spokespeople.

  • Produce talking points and prep spokespeople for interview opportunities.

  • Produce and distribute press releases and statements to amplify Vote Solar efforts and reach a broader audience.

SOCIAL MEDIA MONITORING & TRACKING (10%)

  • Monitor social media related to news coverage and collaborate with the Digital team for metric analysis around member, stakeholder, community, industry, and other brand sentiments.

  • Utilize internal media tracking tools to gather analytics on coverage and produce earned media reports.

  • Continue personal learning and contribute to organizational work on diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Work to embed equity in all organizational internal practices and culture, as well as our programs

  • Bring openness and engagement to personal, professional, and organization-wide learning on race, class, gender, justice, and equity



Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

WHAT YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED

  • Two to four years of experience in press and media relations, preferably in the nonprofit or advocacy sector.

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Passion for renewable energy and sustainability.

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to plan, organize and prioritize workload and handle several tasks simultaneously.

  • Comfortable working in a remote team setting, with demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and driven.

OTHER THINGS YOU MIGHT HAVE ACCOMPLISHED OR WOULD BE EXCITED TO LEARN HERE

  • Expertise in engaging national, local, or trade media and/or a track record of or passion for effectively communicating about advocacy campaigns to the press.

  • Experience and/or interested in learning and communicating about energy policy and the policymaking process.

  • Experience creating and socializing protocols across multiple departments.
